DALLAS – This morning, there is a procession for former Navy SEAL Chris Kyle. His body is being taken 200 miles, from a funeral home in Midlothian to Austin, where he will be laid to rest at the State Cemetery. Kyle and a friend were killed a little over a week ago on a gun range in Erath County. Yesterday, thousands of people came to Cowboys Stadium to honor Kyle.
Like thousands of people standing in line at Cowboys Stadium this morning, Christina De La Torre came to pay tribute to Chris Kyle. For the former cowboy, sharp shooter, rodeo rider and veteran Chris Kyle, Cowboy Stadium seemed like the right place for a memorial.
CHRISTIANA DE LA TORRE: “It’s a sad day; it’s bad weather, but I’m really happy that our American hero has garnered this much support and there’s that many people here trying to say thank you for what you’ve done and just to honor him.”
Most of the crowd sat in the stands. On the field were dozens of military personnel and friends. Front and center was Kyle’s coffin, draped in the American flag.
A fellow Navy SEAL, who didn’t identify himself, said Kyle is a legend not because of his skills as a sniper, but because of his enormous heart.
NAVY SEAL: “He transformed himself from a battle hardened warrior to a caring friend, a dedicated father and a husband. And that is what makes Chris a legend.”
As teammates spoke, the screen showed photos of Kyle as a baby, away in Iraq, and playing with his two kids. Near the end of the ceremony his wife Taya talked about how the family will try to move on.
TAYA KYLE: “We will put one foot in front of the other and remember how silly dad was and how we all made fun of his Texas twang…and we will hug each other tightly just like dad would do with us.”
