I hope you enjoyed the weather earlier this week, as your Tuesday marks the beginning of a string of nasty weather days across nearly the entire state of Texas. Following morning temperatures near 30, highs on Tuesday will be in the upper 40’s to near 50 degrees under thickening cloud cover and light winds.
Timing:
While Tuesday morning may begin mostly clear; clouds will quickly thicken by early afternoon. Clouds will then continue to thicken and lower through the evening as scattered showers move into areas south of Lubbock between 6 PM and 8 PM. Rainfall will increase in coverage and intensity, with widespread heavy rain likely across all of the South Plains by 10 AM Wednesday Morning. Lightning and thunder may accompany the heaviest rain through early Wednesday afternoon. After the noon hour, rain may transition to a wintry mix of sleet, snow, and rain across areas northwest of Lubbock. By 6 PM, heavy rain may also change to a wintry mix in Lubbock, with all snow then likely northwest of Lubbock. As the area of low pressure tracks directly over the region, it is possible that all areas on the Caprock could completely change over to snow by 9 PM Wednesday evening.
Hazards:
Heavy rainfall accumulations between .5in and 1.5 in are likely on the Caprock by the time the storm system exits the region on Thursday morning. Total accumulations of over 2 inches are possible off of the Caprock; especially across the Rolling Plains and i20 corridor! While we are in a drought, rainfall of this magnitude could cause flooding problems across the area between Tuesday night and Thursday morning. As the low pressure system tracks over the South Plains, heavy snowfall may develop on the Caprock. Accumulations over 5 inches are certainly possible. Though, confidence in location and magnitude of snowfall are still highly uncertain. Whether it does end up snowing or not; temperatures will remain between the lower 30’s and 40 degrees throughout this entire storm event.Stay tuned.
