A weak cold front moved through the South Plains on Saturday evening, ushering a cooler air-mass into the region. Because of this, Sunday morning temperatures will be cold; lower 20’s are likely in Lubbock. Afternoon high temperatures will also be cooler than previous days; probably only topping out around 50 in town. Skies will be mostly clear, with initially northerly winds turning southeast a 10-15 mph by Sunday evening. Sunday night will again be chilly with Monday morning lows in the lower 20’s.
A strong storm system looks to affect Texas beginning Monday. For west Texas, Monday will feature an increase in cloud cover. By early Tuesday morning showers will move into the area from the south; becoming heavier and more numerous through the day. There may be a brief break in precipitation Tuesday evening. Though as the area of low pressure passes just to our south and east, an area of ‘wrap around’ precipitation will begin to affect the region by Wednesday morning. Temperatures will be chilly; likely hovering around 40° during the time of precipitation. It appears that temperatures will be warm enough to support mainly rain. Though, temperatures only a few degrees colder could mean the difference between an inch of rain and a heavy snowfall event. Regardless, it appears that this storm will bring copious amounts of much needed moisture to the state. Below is the projected liquid accumulations across the United States for the next five days, as forecasted by the Hydrometeorological Prediction Center on Saturday evening.
An active weather pattern looks to continue across the Southern Plains after this week’s storm. However, things will only become more complicated as we head towards mid January. The Jet stream configuration across North America appears to favor several significant cold air ‘dumps’ from Canada. It is also possible that these surges of cold air could be associated with strong storm systems presenting both severe weather and winter weather threats across the southern United States; similar to the system that will move through Tuesday /Wednesday.
