In typical fashion, this latest winter storm has thrown forecasters a few curve-balls. Snowfall accumulations near an inch have been reported near Carlsbad, NM; as well as areas south and west of Midland. The band of snow responsible for these accumulations is beginning to migrate northward towards the greater South Plains. Some of the latest forecast models have also trended wetter for our area, suggesting that areas south of a Brownfield-Tahoka-Post line could possibly receive over 2 inches of accumulation. Another development is the presence of snowfall ‘banding’ which could further focus and enhance snowfalls totals across isolated areas. Unfortunately, it is nearly impossible to predict when and where these bands will set up. As of this update, expect slowly warming temperatures in Lubbock 9(into the mid 30’s); with periods of flurries or light snow becoming more likely after 2 PM.
The short range model below; known as the RAP, suggests a band of moderate snow will develop across the South Plains later this evening.
