Weather for Wednesday 12/5/12

Good evening,

Today was much cooler across the South Plains, with a high of 64° in Lubbock. This is nearly 15° cooler than Lubbock’s high temperature on Monday. We can thank a cool front that moved through on Monday evening for today’s cool down. Tonight will be even cooler than last night, with an expected low of around 30° in Lubbock. However, if clouds can clear and winds calm down, we may fall into the upper 20’s by tomorrow morning.

Tomorrow will be another very pleasant day across the area with highs topping out in the mid-60’s on campus, under sunny skies and only light breezes. Tomorrow night will feature much warmer lows as this cool air-mass slides off to the east; likely only falling into the upper 30’s. Skies will remain mostly clear, and winds should stay light.

Big Cool Down:

The rest of this week will be mild and mostly clear, until Sunday that is. It is becoming very clear that a pattern change is about to occur across the nation. Forecaster’s confidence on a significant cool down late this weekend is quite high, though the chance for wintry precipitation is still ‘up in the air’. Earlier today, weather forecast models were coming into agreement that the South Plains may be affected by a winter storm sometimes early next week. However, more recent runs of one of the models have almost completely backed off of the idea. What this means is that due to the storms distance from the continental United States, as well as other factors; forecast models will likely have trouble resolving what will happen until we get closer to the event. So in essence, prepare for much colder weather next week; with highs likely in the 40’s and lows possibly in  falling into the teens. However, stay tuned for more information regarding  any wintry precipitation cross our area next week.
