Tuesday’s winter storm produced a heavy, but localized band of snow across central portions of the South Plains. This band of snow produced accumulations under an inch near the airport, with nearly three inches falling on the south side of town. Tonight will be very cold across the region, likely falling to near 10 degrees by Wednesday morning in Lubbock. Winds will remain in the 10-15 mph range overnight; producing bitterly cold wind chills. For this reason the National Weather Service has issued a Wind Chill Advisory for the northwestern South Plains where dangerously cold wind chills will fall below -10 degrees overnight. The cold temperatures present across the region will cause many hazards. For one, roads will remain icy until after lunch tomorrow; making travel hazardous. One must also dress appropriately when heading outdoors in these kinds of temperatures. Only a few minutes in wind chills near or below zero could result in skin damage. Pipes must also be protected overnight; wrap exposed outdoor pipes in an insulating material, open cabinet doors where pipes are located, and if absolutely necessry; let water slept drip from your sink faucet to prevent water pipes from freezing.
Following Wednesday morning, temperatures will struggle towards the 40 degree mark under clearing skies and 10-15 mph winds. If you can make it through tonight, temperatures appear to warm towards comfortable territory by Thursday
