A strong winter storm will affect the entire Southern Plains with several different forms of hazardous weather From heavy snow to severe thunderstorm; the Southern Plains and Mid-South will be dealt a big-plow by this low pressure system. In Lubbock, high temperatures will remain below freezing on Tuesday, likely only topping out in the upper 20’s. Along with cold surface temperatures, strong winds on the order of 20-30 mph; with gusts to 40 mph will reduce wind chill values into the single digits.
Along with ushering in this much colder weather, Tuesday’s storm system will produce a swath of heavy snow from the Texas panhandle into Oklahoma, with North Texas receiving lighter amounts. In Lubbock, it appears a dusting to at most a 1/2 an inch will be the rule. Snow showers will move into the region from eastern New Mexico later tonight, with more light snow possible through the early afternoon on Tuesday. Areas north and east of Lubbock could see 1-3 inches, with many areas in Oklahoma receiving over five inches of snow by the time this storm exits the region on Tuesday night. However with very cold temperatures, even very light amounts of snow in Lubbock could make traveling hazardous. Remember to drive safely when commuting on your Christmas Holiday! Tuesday night will feature frigid temperatures, with a low near 10° in Lubbock. Winds will remain gusty, yielding below zero wind chills overnight Tuesday and Wednesday morning.
Below is an image showing all of the current ‘weather products’ which have been issued by the National Weather Service. The counties shaded in blue are currently under a Winter Weather Advisory; where over an inch of snow is expected and the pink shaded counties in Oklahoma are under a Winter Storm Warning; where over five inches of snow is possible. As of now, Lubbock county is not under any winter weather watches, warning, or advisories. However, this situation is still fluid, and it would not be surprising if Lubbock and surrounding counties were placed under a Winter Weather Advisory later tonight or tomorrow in anticipation of Tuesday’s light snowfall and icy road conditions.
Following this storm system, temperatures will slowly warm to normal levels; highs in the lower 50’s, by Thursday. Though, another storm system and associated cold front will affect the area on Friday bringing clouds and another round of below normal temperatures.
Merry Christmas,
