Good Morning,
Tuesday morning will be another frigid one across the region! However, there will be a few factors keeping the Lubbock region from getting as cold as it was last night; 11°. The first being that there are a few areas of high level clouds which currently lie just to the north of our region; near Amarillo. These clouds may act as a blanket, keeping small amounts of heat from escaping back into space overnight. Another factor which may keep our temperatures slightly warmer tonight will be the winds, which may pick up after midnight as a disturbance passes to our northeast. These increased wind speed help ‘mix down’ some of the warmer air just above the surface; thus limiting cooling. In optimal conditions, surface temperatures can fall as low as the dew-point temperature at any given location. As of 11:10 PM, dew-point temperatures across Lubbock ranged between 11° and 14 °, so theoretically temperatures could fall this low by tomorrow morning. However due to the clouds, and agitated wind speeds; low temperatures will likely only fall into the 14°-19° range.
These temperatures can still create hazardous conditions across the city. Those with automatic sprinklers should have turned them off prior to temperatures falling below freezing. Any spray or moisture accumulated on surrounding concrete from these sprinklers will freeze quickly; potentially making driving or walking hazardous. This cold weather also poses a threat to the piping in our homes. To be safe, it may be a good idea to let faucets drip very slowly overnight to prevent them from freezing, if wanting to save water, opening your cabinet doors will allow for warmer pipe temperatures during the coldest hours. Also, remember to keep an eye on your elderly neighbors the next couple days as their health and livelihood is more susceptible during cold weather. At the very least it would mean you’re living your life in true Red Raider fashion!
Finally, after these past few cold days; a gradual warming trend will begin Tuesday afternoon. High temperatures will warm into the mid- 40’s under full sunshine and northerly winds blowing between 10-20 mph. Unfortunately, Tuesday night will be cold again with temperatures bottoming out near 20°.
Below is a graphical representation of the warmer weather which is expected later this week. Wait it out, and you’ll be back in shorts in no time at all!
