Happy ‘Dead Day’,
Thursday will be a comfortable late Fall day across the South Plains, with highs warming into the mid-70’s by afternoon. Winds will also be tolerable; likely on the order of 5-10 mph. Similar to Wednesday, we will likely have periods of upper level Cirrus clouds move across the area. These clouds will play a significant role in just how cool Thursday night’s temperatures get. If there are more clouds overnight, the Lubbock area may not get below 40°; which is more than 10° above the normal low of 29°. However, if these clouds clear out we could see lows fall into the mid-30’s by Friday morning.
This Weekend:
Forecasters have become fairly certain that the coldest air so far this season will begin impacting the Panhandle and South Plains by Sunday Morning. Along the cold front we can expect a wind shift to the north, with gusts easily reaching 40 mph by Sunday afternoon. Ironically, high temperatures on Sunday will likely be in the morning prior to the frontal passage; with temperatures steadily dropping through the afternoon. In another turn of events, the two main weather models which forecasters use to help develop forecasts are both showing light precipitation impacting the South Plains, including Lubbock, following the cold front on Sunday afternoon. This precipitation may start as sprinkles ,but will likely transition over to snow flurries by Sunday evening. Unlike the cold air, the threat of snowfall is not a certainty. I encourage anyone who has travel plans late this weekend to check back for further updates.
As this storm gets closer, and forecast models come into better agreement with each-other; I will take a closer look at Lubbock’s chance of precipitation and any impacts that it may have on travel.
