Good Morning,
Wednesday afternoon temperatures failed to reach their predicted levels of near 40 degrees. A small snow pack and high clouds only allowed temperatures to warm to a chilly 36 degrees. Forecast models had also been showing Thursday high temperatures reaching the mid 50’s;most recent runs keep us in the 40’s throughout the day. Add any high clouds to the mix and temperatures could be even lower. With all of this in mind, temperatures should top out between 44 and 47 degrees across the central South Plains by 4 PM Thursday. Skies will be partly cloudy, with westerly winds averaging between 10-15 mph.
The weather gets more interesting on Thursday night as a disturbance passes just to our north; sending a strong cold front through the region Thursday night. Behind this cold front northerly winds will strengthen into the 10-20 mph range. There may also be enough lift from the disturbance in the atmosphere to generate some mid-level cloud cover and perhaps a few snow flurries; especially across the northern South Plains. There will not be any accumulations. This is because most of the atmospheric column will be very dry, marking it hard for what little snow is falling to make it all the way to the surface.Other than clouds and possibly a few flurries, this cold front will usher in another bout of cold air. Friday morning lows will likely be in the mid teens!
Friday’s cold temperatures will moderate back towards normal levels by this weekend. However, another storm system looks to impact the area by New Years Day. There are many signs which point to this system being much wetter than the past few that have affected the South Plains.Forecast models are notorious for not handling these types of weather patterns very well, so there will likely be many changes between now and New Years. Stay tuned!
