Weather for Thursday 12/20/12

Good Morning,

Before getting to Thursday’s forecast, an overview of Wednesday’s high wind event is in order. After skies cleared Wednesday morning, the winds rapidly picked up across the entire region; gusting over 60 mph in Lubbock before all was said and done. Below is a  breakdown of the strongest wind gusts across the South Plains…

61mph @ Abernathy                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              60mpg @ Denver City                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    72mph @ Floydada                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     59mph @ Texas Tech campus                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 59mph @ Memphis                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     61mph @ Reese Center                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     62 mph @ Seagraves

Over 60 of the near 70 Texas Tech Mesonet weather observation sites recorded wind gusts over 50 mph on Wednesday. These strong winds took a tragic toll when several motor vehicle accidents, attributed to the blowing dust, occurred on interstate 27; killing one and injuring several. Power outages were also reported through the day as high winds blew transformers, toppled power-lines, and snapped electrical wires. Hopefully it is a long time before the South Plains experiences a dust storm similar to the one which was felt on Wednesday.

Thursday morning temperatures will be very cold, near 20° by daybreak. The combination of these cold air temperatures and a 20 mph breeze will cause wind chills to plummet into the single digits. If venturing out before 10 AM, make sure to wear protective clothing to prevent discomfort. After 10 AM, winds should continue to diminish in intensity as temperatures struggle towards a high of 50° by mid-afternoon. The best part of Thursday’s forecast is that skies will remain mostly clear through the day and into Thursday evening! Temperatures will again fall to very cold levels overnight; by Friday morning Lubbock may be sitting in the mid-teens!

For more on Friday morning’s cold temperatures and a look at Lubbock’s snow chances for later in the week; check back for another entry on Friday morning.
