Weather for Sunday 12/23/12

Good Morning,

Sunday will be the last mild day in Lubbock for a while. High temperatures will be near 70°, under sunny skies. Winds will be strong;possibly gusting upwards of 35 mph by late afternoon. These gusty winds will likely cause patchy areas of blowing dust; though it will be nothing like last Wednesday’s dust storm. Sunday night lows will be near freezing, under continued clear skies and breezy winds. Monday morning commute temperatures will be in the lower to mid-30’s; with wind chills in the 20’s as 10-20 mph winds continue into Monday.

A significant cool down appears in the cards, beginning Monday. On Christmas day, high temperatures may not get above freezing with even stronger winds expected. Overnight temperatures will also be very cold, likely falling into the lower teens beginning Christmas night. These cold surface temperatures combined with 20-30 mph winds will yield wind chills near zero, by the morning of December 26th. It still appears that most of the snow will remain to the east of Lubbock, though a few flurries or light snow showers are possible  by Christmas night. At this time, accumulations appear to remain minimal.

The Christmas day system will mark the beginning of a much more active weather pattern . There appears to be another storm system which may affect the area between 12/29 and 1/1, which could bring snow to the entire South Plains. However, this system is still very far out and much can change. Stay Tuned!
