Weather for Monday 12/24/12

A cold front will move across the South Plains overnight Sunday, with cooler temperatures  in its wake. Highs on Monday will make it into the upper 50’s by late afternoon, under sunny skies and 10-20 mph southerly winds. These strengthening southerly winds are due to an approaching strong storm system; moving in from the northwest. While Monday’s afternoon temperatures will be near normal despite Sunday’s cold front, a much stronger cold front associated with this storm system will race through the region on Monday Evening. Behind this cold front, much colder and windy conditions are expected.

Christmas Storm System:

Other than the much colder and windy weather, the approaching area of low pressure which will move across southern Oklahoma and Texas will produce snow on its backside and severe weather ahead of it. Right now it appears that areas in the eastern Panhandle,Oklahoma, and the northern half of the Dallas-Forth Worth area stand the best chance of receiving measurable snowfall. Total accumulations could be in the 5-8 inch range. In Lubbock, flurries or a brief period of light snow can be expected on Christmas, though accumulations will likely be minimal. Because of this, the National Weather Service has not issued any winter weather products; watches, warnings, advisories, etc, for the South Plains. However, even 24-hours out these storm systems can act contradictory to what forecast models show. By Christmas eve night, forecasters will be able to produce a much more confident forecast and can issue any necessary winter weather products at that time.

Looking ahead, this cool and active weather patterns appears to continue into the new year. Another weaker storm system will impact the area on Friday 12/28 with another cool down and possibly light snow. Following Friday, there is yet another storm system which may impact the South Plains between Monday 12/31 and Wednesday 1/2; this system may be a bigger factor in our South Plains Weather as we begin the new year.

Happy Holidays,

Cutter Martin (KTXT Weather)
