3PM Friday Severe Weather Update

So far today, the South Plains has been experiencing very gusty winds and blowing dust. Below is an image depicting the peak-wind gusts recorded at Texas Tech Mesonet sites so far today. As Shown, winds have already been gusting over 40 mph across the area. However, even stronger winds are expected behind the cold front which is just now moving into the western South Plains from eastern New Mexico; possibly gusting upwards of 60 mph by later this afternoon after the frontal passage.

Ahead of the incoming cold front, severe thunderstorms are becoming a distinct possibility, this is why the Storm Prediction Center has placed the South Plains , including Lubbock, under a severe Thunderstorm Watch until 8:00 PM this evening. The biggest threats with these incoming storms are high winds, and large hail. However an isolated tornado or two can’t be ruled out. While storms are already affecting areas near the New Mexico border, it appears that storms will not begin affecting Lubbock until 4PM or so. Remember, winds gusting near 60 mph, heavy rain, small hail, and dangerous lightning can all be expected with these storms as they move in.
